Well, I am now officially a college graduate from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. I received my BFA with a concentration in photography (Photography, never would have guessed that one, right). What an adventure the past five years has my life been..

How to make easy, healthy protein smoothies

If you already know me, you probably know I am a vegetarian and that I always have been. I don’t eat fish and I am a very picky eater. Since I don’t eat meat I have to get my protein from another source. Though Mexican food is my favorite (specifically bean cheese and rice burritos), that is something that I can’t eat every day. Well I could because its delicious but I need some variety in my food. So get my daily protein I try to do a protein shake in the morning. I found that this is the easiest and most simple way that I can get that protein,  plus they taste pretty darn good. A lot of people ask what I put in my shakes so I wanted to create a post on what I include and how to make it fairly easy.

Ingredients that are included in every shake:

·      Orgain Organic Plant Based Protein Powder, Sweet Vanilla Bean.  I buy mine from Amazon, I found they have the best price for quantity and its delivered to my front door

·      Or Orgain Organic Plant Based Protein Powder, Creamy Chocolate Fudge.

·      Super Green Drink Powder from Trader Joes 

·      Organic Almond Butter or Coconut Oil (1 tbp) – When you are adding protein powder to your smoothies, you have to have a natural fat in it as well for your body to process the protein.

·      Spinach – It’s healthy and you can’t taste it.

·      Chia Seeds – These little things are good for you too without a taste.

·      Almond or vanilla coconut milk from Trader Joes

 

This month my two main smoothie flavors are:

·      Banana blueberry: One large banana with one cup of blueberries with vanilla protein powder.

·      Cherry berry: One cup of cherries with one cup of mixed berries with protein powder

 

The magic trick to make it easy to have a smoothie every day: 

I use a magic bullet so that way there is no mess to clean up after blending the smoothie, you just take the cup and you’re on your way. Another component that I do to make it easy is to PREP! I go to the store and a ton of bananas – about 30 (it looks like I own a monkey with all these), a frozen three pound bag of organic cherries, one of mixed berries and one bag of blueberries from Costco. Next I get everything out and open about thirty-sandwich size zip lock baggies. I start with the fruit in each bag then put the rest of the stuff on top because it will stick to the fruit making it easier to come out.

After filling all the bags, I put them all in the freezer and they are ready to go. So in the mornings I grab a bag out of the freezer, pour it into my cup (sometimes you have to thaw it out a little) and fill the cup up with almond or coconut water, blend and GO!

Vacation to Maui, Hawaii

Over a week in Maui ... talk about PARADISE! I stayed in a condo right on the beach about five minutes north of Lahaina. The condo was amazing! It had a lanai with a view of the ocean and there were huge Hawaiian sea turtles right there every day. I brought my own snorkel gear (mine is pink, what else do you expect?) and snorkeled every day at the condo and usually at another beach as well.  One of the best places to snorkel was Black Rock. The water was the clearest, mostly calm and had tons of fish. The only downside is that since it is a popular spot, there are a lot of people.

Another day I did Road to Hana. I heard that the road gets an insane amount of traffic so I got ahead start and left at 6am. This road is so lusciously green and gorgeous (unlike California). I stopped at many locations along the way including Twin Falls, the rainbow eucalyptus trees, Wai’anapanapa state park, and Wailua waterfalls. The best part is the Pipiwai trail (which is about 12 miles past Hana). It is a 4 mile hike but it's easy and there is a lot to see along the trail.

Most days I hit the beach, snorkeled, and I got my tan on (I wish my tan would last forever). Other awesome things I did, was go to the blow hole, see the famous heart rock, watched the sunrise at the top of Haleakala, ate shave ice from Ululanis, ate banana-macadamia nut pancakes with coconut syrup, drank lots of piña coladas, got pictures taken, and overall had an amazing time! When we were about to board our flight home, the airline asked for volunteers to get off the flight because it was overbooked, promising a free hotel and travel vouchers . Of course we volunteered to stay in Maui another night for free! I think next year we will have to take a trip to Kauai!
